Ainda recentemente a Dra. Cláudia Pinto Pinto deu uma interessante conferência sobre esse livro.

Para quem não quiser ler pode sempre ver um resumo (com muitos desmancha prazeres, não leia se for ler o livro) em inglês. Mas recomendo que se dê antes uma olhadela nos teoremas de Gödel  sem o qual se perde uma parte importante da história.

Esse livro pode ser considerado como um bom exemplo do género a que se convencionou chamar “Steampunk“, onde, geralmente em história alternativa , se descreve uma tecnologia comparavel à que existiu no século XX  ou em séculos seguintes, baseada nos conceitos científicos do século XIX.

No “The Difference Engine” a  hipótese de partida é que Carles Babbage teria conseguido conseguido concluir sua projectada máquina diferencial - ou melhor  a suas máquinas diferenciais – e posteriormente a sua mais poderosa máquina analítica que funcionaria como um computador moderno, mas baseado apenas em peças mecânicas. Esse feito teria alterado o curso da história, com uma Inglaterra Victoriana, sofrendo uma revolução industrial  “dopada” por computadores.

Na realidade Babbage nunca acabou de construi nenhuma dessas máquinas, mas nos seus planos, que nos chegaram, podemos observar conceitos que se aplicariam, mais de 100 anos depois, aos modernos computadores.

Nunca houve consenso entre os especialistas se as máquinas de Babbage poderiam ter sido construídas, com a tecnologia do século XIX.

Lembrei-me de escrever estas linhas porque muito recentemente apareceu nos “media” notícias da construção da máquina analítica, com tecnologia do século XIX e segundo os planos de Babbage, de que se pode ver um vídeo a partir do site da revista “Wired”, por encomenda do milionário americano Nathan_Myhrvold.

Curiosamente na cobertura do evento nunca vi mencionado que já à mais de uma década o Museu da Ciência em Londres construiu uma primeira versão da máquina de Babbage,  que aliás é muito mais fácil de visitar por quem vive em Portugal.

Isto parece tornar evidente que a máquina diferencial poderia ter sido construída no século XIX. Falta agora tentar construir a máquina analítica o que é uma tarefa bem mais complicada.

Simetria Sonora é um novo projecto – uma nova iniciativa, uma nova actividade – da Associação Simetria FC & F, que cremos ser pioneiro(a) a nível nacional e, até, talvez, também a nível internacional, mais concretamente entre as organizações nossas congéneres.

Proposto e coordenado pelo nosso associado Octávio dos Santos, consiste fundamentalmente numa base de dados, numa lista de discos de artistas portugueses (alguns) e estrangeiros (principalmente) que se inserem no que poderíamos designar de música popular contemporânea de expressão – ou de influência – anglo-americana. Porém, o que distingue as obras abaixo indicadas é o facto de os seus temas (na sua totalidade, maioria ou até numa minoria significativa e preponderante), os sons, as suas letras, a ideia-chave ou o conceito principal – incluindo gráfico e audiovisual (capa, livrete, vídeos) – os colocarem num «género» que poderíamos designar de… ficção científica e fantástico; e que pode incluir, além de futurologias diversas e de revisionismos históricos variados, o bizarro, a fantasia, o terror, o horror… Ou nem tanto: estados alterados, sonhos e pesadelos, realidades alternativas ao estilo «Quinta Dimensão» («Twilight Zone»).

Na verdade, não é só nos livros e nos filmes que os associados e colaboradores da Simetria, e não só, podem desfrutar das sensações estranhas e das emoções fortes que as imaginações individuais e colectivas podem suscitar. O que distingue (distinguia) e separa (separava) aqueles dos discos é (era) a existência indubitável de uma linha narrativa, de uma história minimamente coerente, lógica. Aparentemente, tal não acontece (acontecia) em álbuns musicais – à excepção, claro, dos chamados concept-albums, álbuns-conceptuais – mas, segundo Octávio dos Santos, a realidade é outra. Este nosso associado desenvolve desde 1990 outro projecto – que é também um livro – intitulado «Códigos» (http://octanas.blogspot.com/2005/10/obras-cdigos.html), que consiste na «releitura» e no «reeordenamento», na «resequenciação» das canções que compõem qualquer CD de qualquer artista (compilações e gravações «ao vivo» – de faixas não inéditas – excluídas) com vista à «decifração» do seu sentido «subliminar», ou, por outras palavras, e precisamente, com vista à obtenção dessa tal linha narrativa coerente, apesar de latente. Porém, mesmo quando entendidos apenas como colecções de canções sem ligação aparente, cada um dos discos abaixo mencionados pode ser inserido na «categoria» FC & F, desde que «obedeçam aos critérios», que «preencham os requisitos» acima referidos.
